Our laboratory is actively engaged in two major research domains: 1. Malaria Biology and Drug Target Discovery Our primary research focuses on understanding the biology of Plasmodium falciparum to identify novel molecular targets for the development of effective antimalarial therapeutics. We employ recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology alongside a range of molecular biology, biotechnology, and bioinformatics tools to investigate parasite biology and validate potential drug targets. 2. Indigenous Fermented Food Research The second major area of research is the characterization and evaluation of the traditional fermented food product Sathu, an indigenous probiotic food of the Kuki community of Northeast India. Our work aims to explore its microbial diversity, probiotic potential, nutritional properties, and possible health benefits. Our laboratory takes pride in the pioneering contributions of its alumni. Dr. Prabhash Jyoti Mahanta initiated malaria research in the laboratory by investigating the insulin-degrading enzyme of P. falciparum as a potential therapeutic target. Dr. Ranjita Yumkhaibam established the probiotic food research program through her work on the indigenous fermented food Sathu. Their research has been published in several reputed peer-reviewed journals. Currently, two research scholars are actively pursuing projects in the field of malaria biology, further advancing our efforts toward understanding parasite biology and identifying novel drug targets. In addition to academic research, our laboratory is committed to capacity building and scientific training. We regularly offer hands-on training in recombinant DNA technology and other molecular biology techniques to students, researchers, and participants from various educational and research institutions, promoting practical learning and research excellence.
