A psychological emergency is a situation in which an individual's usual coping mechanisms are no longer effective in dealing with ongoing problems. Most people affected by emergencies experience significant distress, such as feelings of anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, irritability or anger, and physical aches and pains. Individuals with severe mental health disorders may be particularly vulnerable during and after emergencies and require access to basic support services and professional clinical care. In such situations, the Counselling Centre may provide psychological first aid, establish immediate contact with medical professionals, and refer the individual to an expert psychiatrist for further evaluation and treatment when necessary. Some common signs of a psychological emergency include: Suicidal statements or suicide attempts Homicidal threats, whether written or verbal, or attempted homicide or assault Destruction of property or involvement in other criminal acts Extreme anxiety resulting in panic reactions Inability to communicate effectively (e.g., garbled or slurred speech, disjointed thoughts) Loss of contact with reality (e.g., seeing or hearing things that are not present, expressing beliefs or engaging in actions that are inconsistent with reality) Highly disruptive behavior (e.g., hostility, aggression, or violence)
